FAQ
How do I sign up for a class or lesson?
Contact Kristin or call 800.275.9430 x1 to sign up or for information. Payment in full is required to reserve your spot. Classes are limited to four students maximum. A full materials list and syllabus as well as detailed directions to the Studio and a list of local fabric stores will be provided to you upon registration.
What is the difference between a class and a lesson?
A class is conducted in a group with a minimum of two and a maximum of four students. The class schedule is fixed at the beginning of each season as laid out in the course catalog. A lesson is a private lesson, during which all instruction will be given directly and only to you. Private lessons can be scheduled at your convenience to fit your personal schedule.
How and when do I pay for classes and lessons?
Payment in full is due upon registration for a class. Lesson Pack payments are due at the first lesson of that Pack. Payment for lessons by the hour is due at each lesson for each lesson. We accept cash, personal checks, money orders, VISA, MasterCard, Discover, and American Express.
What is a Lesson Pack?
A Lesson Pack is a prepaid set of 5, 10, or 15 hours of lesson time. For paying in advance for these hours, you receive a discount of 10%, 15%, or 20%, respectively. Lesson hours can be scheduled at your convenience and in any distribution you like. Lesson Pack purchase does not guarantee you the same lesson time slot each week.
Do I have to do one hour per week for my private lessons?
No. You can do as many hours as you like (schedule permitting) per week and you can take a break from lessons if you need to.
What time slots are currently available for private lessons?
Available time slots change from week to week, so call or email Kristin to find a time that is convenient for you. In general, lesson hours run between 12:00-9:30 pm Monday-Friday with occasional Saturday times available.
Do I have to have my lesson at the same time every week?
No. Private lesson scheduling is flexible. You can do a different time and/or day each week, skip weeks, add extra lessons when you need to finish a project, or stick to the same time each week. Doing the same lesson time each week does not guarantee you that particular slot indefinitely, although scheduling preference is given to regular students.
What will I work on in my lesson?
We generally recommend that beginners start with pajama pants as a first project. PJ pants usually take about 4-5 lesson hours to complete, so they fit into a 5-Hour Lesson Pack well. After that (or if you already have some sewing experience), you can choose your own project with Kristin’s guidance.
Do I have to buy a Lesson Pack to take private lessons?
No. You may also pay for lessons by the hour at a rate of $35/hour. The benefit of buying a Lesson Pack is that you receive a discounted rate.
Do I need to bring anything with me?
For private lessons, yes. Students provide their own fabric, patterns, and notions. Supply requirements for classes vary so be sure to get the materials list from Kristin. The Studio is fully stocked with all the non-project-specific tools you will need, but you may bring your own scissors, pins, etc., if you prefer.
Do I have to bring my own sewing machine?
No, but you may do so if you would like to learn to use it better (or if you just prefer to use your own machine). We have four sewing machines and one serger at the Studio for student use. You will always have a sewing machine to yourself during classes and lessons. If you are taking a class with required homework, you will need to have access to a sewing machine at home between classes.
Can multiple students split a private lesson?
Yes. Double lessons are available at a rate of $50/hour (total, ie. $25/hour each). Discounted Lesson Packs are available for double lessons. Please be aware that your projects will take about 50% longer to complete in double lessons since instruction is being given to two people at once. Ideally, both students should work on the same type of project to benefit most from the lessons. No more than two students can split private lessons, but contact Kristin if you would like to suggest a class on a specific topic.
Where is Craft & Sew Studio located?
We are located in Virginia Beach near the Haygood/Thoroughgood area off Independence Blvd. Please see the About page for a map.
